Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
