Manchester Synagogue Attacker Had Been Released on Bail for Reported Sexual Assault During Time of Incident

The individual responsible for the deadly attack at a Manchester synagogue had been released on bail from authorities in connection with an accusation of sexual assault when the incident took place, as per available information.

Jihad al-Shamie, aged 35, was under investigation over an alleged sex crime that is said to have happened earlier this year.

Al-Shamie, who was born in Syria, is believed to have a record of criminal offenses, however he had not drawn attention from anti-terror authorities.

The assailant was fatally shot by armed officers after he killed a Jewish man and severely injured multiple other individuals during the assault on the Heaton Park synagogue in north Manchester last Thursday.

Two men, 53-year-old Adrian Daulby and 66-year-old Melvin Cravitz, died in the attack. One victim was fatally hit a bullet fired by armed police aimed at the attacker.

Counter-terrorism police and security services are currently investigating the assailant's history, as it is believed that he selected the holiest day in Judaism, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar, to attack those praying.

Even though the attacker was not known to counter-terrorism agencies or referred to the anti-radicalisation scheme Prevent, he had faced prosecution for prior crimes.

The exact timing the reported rape occurred, but Shamie was on bail while being investigated by Greater Manchester police.

An insider stated that he had additional prior offenses, albeit for less serious crimes unrelated to terrorism.

“He was on nobody’s radar for terrorism but he definitely had a history of crime, though no indication he was going to do such an extreme act,” said one source.

Police are looking into whether the attacker was behind a threatening message to a former Conservative MP in the year 2012.

A message to the former MP came from someone calling themselves “Jihad Alshamie” and stated, “It is people like you who deserve to die.”

Howell, who left his position as MP for Henley in 2024, expressed uncertainty if it was the identical individual and believed that police had not taken the death threat with adequate seriousness back then.

Media coverage from 2012 indicated that he may have been singled out due to his pro-Israel stance.

“The last thing I want to appear as is a drama queen, but you have to take seriously a menacing message when it says, ‘I would like to see you dead,’” the former MP said in 2012, according to reports by the Jerusalem Post.
“It is not just a question of me, it is my family and my staff. All it takes is one person out there who is weird enough, with a warped perspective of life, to make an attempt to act on it.” He noted that local police had provided him with “extremely good security advice.”

Police have yet to verify whether the “Jihad Alshamie” who contacted the former MP is the same individual who committed the assault on the synagogue, but they are investigating a possible link.

Shabana Mahmood, Shabana Mahmood, stated that Shamie was not under ongoing scrutiny by anti-terror units or security agencies at the time of the incident. They had no reason to think he had previously been on their watchlist, though inquiries were continuing.
