No fewer than 13 people killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's economic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
